Day Trips from Budapest, Hungary - The Top 25 Destinations

In Hungary all roads lead to the capital like the spokes of a wheel, so Budapest makes a convenient base for day trips to most parts of the country and even to a few destinations across the border in Slovakia and Austria. Many different types of landscapes are within reach by train or bus, from the forested hills of the Danube Bend to the flat vistas of the Great Plain. I have compiled some of the most worthwhile day trips within three hours by public transport from Budapest, and organized them by distance into three categories - destinations within one hour of travel, two hours of travel and three hours of travel. Up to three hours is quite a long distance to cover for a day trip, but some of the best sights in the country fall within this range, such as Pecs, Tihany and Tokaj. I have also given each destination a star rating out of five to represent how worthwhile it is to make the effort to get there. The photos in this article show, from top to bottom, Budapest, Esztergom, Visegrad, Eger and Gyor.
